Details: PB 343 took off at 1627 from RAF Graveley (Cambs.).
Hit by flak, and believed to have crashed at 1904
between Reide and Thedinghausen, two small towns
12 km SSE and 14 km SE respectively from the centre
of Bremen. Four of the crew are buried in the Sage
War Cemetery (Germany); F/O Potts and both Canadians,
at Runneymede. At 19 years of age, F/O Mills was
one of the youngest navigators to lose his life on Bomber Command operations.
The Bomber Command War Diaries quotes 340 Halifaxes, 310
Lancasters, and 14 Mosquitos participated in the raid (664 aircraft in total). Losses were 23 Hallies and 8 Lancs (4.7%). This was the 1st large raid on Hanover since Oct 1943. The city received bombs all over, with 493 buildings destroyed and 250 killed.
